Alex Villar was born the youngest of four to Cuban immigrants in New Jersey and raised in Miami in the 90s. His musical influences are unsurprisingly broad. He began dabbling in music in high school, and eventually became a well-regarded bass player in the Miami scene, and later in the Gainesville scene, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Florida. Villar returned to Miami, got married and settled into a typical American life, leaving music behind almost entirely.
Villar could have gone the route of hustling entrepreneur with a house in a gated-community and a BMW on lease – and damn near did, for a while at least. But with an analytical mind and a curiosity the size of the Parthenon, he was better suited to be the apprentice to Pythagoras. The itch for change became acute.
In 2015, Villar retired from an old, stale life, picked up a guitar and started writing energetically. He currently performs iterations of his writing that take the form of intimate acoustic performances, alluring electro pop arrangements and even a blues-rock trio, all while collaborating with other artists, such as Paula Gaviño. His work is as eclectic as his influences. On leap day, 2016, Villar self-released his debut EP, “Artifacts,” which chronicles his life from his parents’ divorce to his own recovery from the traditional, with a sexy, somber and ultimately near spiritual expression. Villar is only just back on the saddle. Big things can be expected from this near-geometrician.
He never did lease a "beemer." His peers from prep school are understandably disappointed.
Alex currently resides in Denver, CO.
